Alameda County and the Department of Public Affairs and Administration at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) invite you to apply for admission to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. This program is offered at the County of Alameda Training & Education Center in Oakland, and is identical to the MPA program offered at the CSUEB Hayward campus.

The Alameda County MPA program is offered to public employees in Alameda County. Individuals directly employed by Alameda County will receive priority admission consideration. The MPA program can be completed in two years.

This degree will help you cultivate the intellectual and practical tools you need to become a more effective employee, supervisor, or manager in the public and non-profit sectors. In addition, the degree may open doors for individuals already working in public administration, since many professional opportunities require additional education beyond the Bachelor’s degree.

The MPA program offered through Alameda County is offered in a cohort model, in which a group of students move through all classes of the program together. Past programs have shown that a cohort provides mutual academic, emotional, and logistical support for program success and timely degree completion. The camaraderie and collaborative learning with experienced colleagues builds lasting personal ties and professional growth. Class discussions, especially in sensitive topics, can thus be more in depth and students reap the benefits of this.

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, in any area of study
• Statement of purpose (2-3 pages)
• Minimum overall GPA of 2.50 (C+): GPAs below 2.50 will be considered if the overall GPA in the last half of the baccalaureate coursework is 2.50 or better
• Two letters of academic and/or professional recommendation
• Completed graduate admission application with CSUEB through CSUMentor
• Submission of all undergraduate/graduate transcripts

The Management & Supervision Certificate program is designed to enhance the capabilities and performance of persons currently in management and supervisory positions as well as to prepare students who aspire to future roles as managers and supervisors. The program strongly focuses on the knowledge and skills needed for effective management and supervision in formal organizations in the business, governmental and non-profit sectors.

By combining management theory with day-to-day practical application, class work provides an opportunity for actual performance as well as the development of supervisory and management skills.

Chabot Community College, located in Hayward, is now accepting applications for the PACE Degree & Transfer Program.

PACE offers evening and online classes in a comprehensive, multi-semester Learning Community which provides a streamlined pathway toward college graduation and CSU transfer.  PACE provides courses which satisfy both the A.A. Degree and CSU General Education transfer requirements, and offers two built-in majors requiring no additional classes.  We coordinate closely with the CSU East Bay PACE Program, although other degrees and transfer institutions are also available.

PACE is especially good for people who work 9am-5pm and who wish to pursue degrees in Social Science, Education, or Business.  PACE is designed for students who are at or near the beginning of their college career, and who have less than 20 units of general education classes already completed. 

PACE offers a combination of online and evening courses to meet A.A. degree and CSU transfer requirements, and includes 19-23 courses. Approximately 1/3-1/2 of the classes can be done online.

People who are interested in joining PACE should follow the instructions “How to Apply for PACE” at Chabot College’s site. Attending one 1-hour PACE Orientation is mandatory for admission to the program. 

PACE offers two built-in A.A. Degree Majors:

• Liberal Arts Option I or II with a Social & Behavioral Sciences Area of Emphasis
• Behavioral Science

PACE can also be adjusted for many other majors, such as Administration of Justice, Business, Early Childhood Education, Education, Environmental Studies, Sociology, Psychology, etc.  PACE is designed especially for Social Science majors.  PACE can assist with the beginning of the road to Nursing, but is not designed for those who want to pursue degrees in the medical field.

PACE also offers two built-in transfer majors at CSU East Bay’s PACE Program:

• Human Development Major – excellent for careers in social work, counseling, law enforcement (probation), human resources, etc.
• Liberal Studies Major – a well-rounded major for careers in teaching, business, government, etc.

PACE also works well for students wishing to transfer to St. Mary’s College degree completion program’s B.A. in Leadership & Organizational Studies, or Holy Names University’s degree completion program with degrees in Business, Liberal Studies, and Psychology, or other private colleges and universities.
