The idea of flow was originally popularized by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
Flow can be described as a state of engagement, where one’s skills match the challenges.
Here’s a flow model:
If you find yourself in the “red zone,” where the challenge is greater than your skill, you’ll feel anxiety. To get out of the red, decrease the challenge or improve your skills.
If your skills are greater than the challenge, you may find yourself in the “blue zone” of boredom. Here you should seek out challenges, like joining at committee or taking on new responsibilities.
If you notice you are engaged and energized by your work, you may be in the “green zone,” which is the ideal place to be. Stay in the flow be making adjustment to your challenges and skills!
